Whether for vacation or a permanent move, shipping can be as simple as buying a pet airline ticket for flying cargo or as elaborate as door-to-door pet relocation service. For a breakdown of costs and considerations when buying a pet airline ticket, see How Much Does Pet Air Travel Cost.

Typical costs:
  • Pet air travel costs $70 to $1,000, depending on the pet's size and the distance traveled.
  • Professional pet relocation costs from $200 to $1,200, depending on the pet's size, temperament and services included.
  • We Move Pets specializes in ground shipping within the continental U.S., with drivers transporting pets in vans. Their service costs from $500 to $725, plus fuel over 500 miles.
  • Pet Air, a pet travel agency, offers airport to airport service from $190 to $1,000, depending on the animal's size. "Airport to airport" service means the owner would drop off and pick up the pet from the airport.
  • International pet relocation service, such as those offered by Animal Land Pet Movers can cost up to $2,500.
What should be included:
  • Pet relocation services include instructing the owner on making the appropriate veterinary appointments, securing any necessary health certificates and properly preparing the kennel the pet will travel in. This basic travel assistance costs $200 -$600.
  • Complete professional pet relocation with door-to-door service, costs $500 -$1,200.
  • International services and costs that could be included, depending on the destination country, are the following: preparing an import permit and documentation, veterinary inspection, customs clearance, quarantine reservation and quarantine fees. Animal Land Pet Movers specializes in international pet relocation.
Additional costs:
  • Kennels, also called crates or carriers, cost $25 to $571 depending on size and features. See Pet Travel Carrier for details.
  • Pet insurance costs $1 per $100 in valuation.
  • If traveling with a pet often, AAA offers a pet travel guide for $18.
Discounts:
  • Some pet relocation services, like Pet Air, offer a discount of as much as $200 for making the reservation online.
  • Shipping multiple pets is often discounted at half-price for the additional pets.
Shopping for shipping a pet:
  • UShip, a professional shipping company, provides a list of questions to ask a pet relocation service.
  • If the pet is traveling internationally, be sure to crate-train the pet so that its carrier is a place the pet is used to being. The carrier should be a place where the pet feels safe and comfortable, since the pet will be inside it for several hours at a time.
  • Sedation, or giving a pet a tranquilizing medication, is not recommended by most veterinarians and the American Veterinary Medical Association.
