Grooming is available at many businesses -- including dedicated groomers' shops, boarding kennels, veterinarians' offices, pet stores and pet spas.
Typical costs:
For small breeds or mid-sized breeds that do not have thick hair or require a complicated cut, grooming costs about $30 to $50. Examples include the Bichon Frise, Miniature Poodle, Maltese, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Retriever.
For mid-sized breeds, or larger breeds that do not have thick hair or require a complicated cut, grooming costs about $50 to $70. Examples include the Wheaten Terrier, Collie, Afghan Hound, Chow Chow and Golden Retriever.
For mid-to-large-sized breeds that have thick hair and require complicated cuts, or giant breeds, grooming costs about $70 to $90 and up. Examples include the Standard Poodle, Bernese Mountain Dog, Bouvier Des Flandre, Briard, and Great Pyrenees.
Bath-only grooming -- with bath, ear cleaning and nail trimming -- on a non-matted dog costs less than full grooming -- usually 50 to 75 percent of the price. This is most common for dogs with very short hair.
Average grooming prices tend to be about 25 percent higher in the Northeast region of the country than in the Midwest, with the rest of the country falling in between, according to PetGroomer.com[1] .
The groomer usually bathes and dries the dog, cleans the ears, trims the nails, and clips the hair into a particular style.
Additional costs:
De-matting for long hair costs about $7 to $9.
For $3 to $10 extra, a groomer will use flea-killing shampoo or skin-soothing colloidal oatmeal shampoo or do a hot oil treatment.
For about $10 extra, a groomer will remove skunk odor.
For about $10 to 20 extra, a groomer will brush teeth or express the anal glands.
Hand cutting, which is time consuming, costs between $10 and $30 more than using clippers, depending on the size of the dog. It offers a different look.
Mobile grooming clinics charge a convenience fee -- about $10 to $15 extra.
Discounts:
A puppy groom can cost as little as $10.
Some groomers have referral programs, where a client can earn free or discounted grooming.
Tip: At-home grooming costs very little. For dogs that require trimming, professional-grade clippers and scissors can be a wise investment for between $50 and $150. Amazon[2] offers videos and DVDs on dog grooming starting at about $25.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals[3] has an at-home grooming guide.
Shopping for dog grooming:
To find a groomer, ask fellow dog owners, your veterinarian or a humane organization. Or, contact the National Dog Groomers Association of America[4] .
Tip: Before making an appointment, stop by the facility to check cleanliness and meet the groomer. It is important to make sure pets are checked on regularly during cage blowdrying, or dried by hand, to prevent overheating. The Humane Society of the United States[5] has a primer on choosing a groomer. Large chain pet stores, such as PETCO[6] and PetSmart[7] offer grooming services.
Groomers usually require proof that vaccinations are up to date.
Tip: Tell the groomer ahead of time if the dog is geriatric or has health problems or behavior issues. Many groomers will not accept aggressive dogs.
Tip: Before leaving the salon, make sure the groomer understands exactly what you want -- ideally by showing a photograph. Best Friends Pet Care has a primer on how to talk to a groomer[8] as well as grooming tips with photos for many breeds[9] .

I work at four paws pet grooming in manlius ny i love working with the dogs i agree it is important to keep your dog on a 6 to 8 week appointment with the same groomer everytime that way your pup knows what to expect. We charge 48 plus tax on most small breeds for a full groom however if the dog is a mess we may have to charge extra. Big dogs like goldendoodles we charge 60 to 70 base price again depends on the condition size and hair cut wanted so it could vary. Always tip the groomer it is alot of hard work not everyone is cut out for it. Always meet and talk with your groomer about the groom and please if your not willing to brush your dog get them in sooner so its not a bad experience for them. We want them to like the groom as much ad you.
I've tried many groomers and I finally found one who knows exactly what she's doing! Sandi has been grooming & teaching for 22 years and obviously knows her profession. I've been trying to find a groomer who can do a PROPER standard poodle cut for 2 years. I can finally stop looking. I found Sandi at Le Caniche Rose after seeing some articles about her in a few local newspapers. i decided to give her a try and I'm so glad I did! My dog Ginger looks like she belongs in a show ring! Sandi was pleasant and professional and Ginger loved her. The salon is beautifully decorated and clean. There is even an area where you can sit and watch tv while you wait for you dog, if you want to. Sandi does creative grooming and Asian grooming, too. She can even color your pet if you're into that sort of thing. Her salon is right on Broadway in the Fountain City section of Knoxville, right across the street from the park. I love this place and I'll never go anywhere else again!
I have ben grooming for a few years now and at times it can be a hard job if the dog your trying to groom is not being good for groom!!! If your not able to brush your dog at home without fido trying to bite u chances are yours dog is not being very nice with us as well. We can only do so much you can only be as good as the dog on your table. We take are time with older more nervous dogs give them breaks, take them to go bathroom, even dry them on the floor if that makes them more comfortable .when your pet is ready to be picked up we will call you if we don't call that means your dog or cat is not done yet.and last thing prices... we are not trying to be mean or rude by charging you a damatting fee it takes twice as long to get mats out of your dogs coat if you would try to brush your dogs coat between grooming then we wouldn't havto charge for dematting witch also causes us to then be behind on other grooms witch is not far to other pet owners. Owners with xl breeds newfi st Bernard
I have two young morkies. I take them to Groomingdales at Alsip Nursery in St John Indiana. They do a wonderful job. She worked on them for 4 1/2 hours. She is good and patient. With them being small it takes a lot of time. I love the place.
Are you out of your mind?? Not only would I not have taken another appointment with the woman, but I would have told her that I was calling the police if she did not pay my fee. I'm mobile in VA. and I charge $75.00 and up for my dogs. I work too hard to take less and I buy the best products available. You're cheating yourself and unless you're twelve and don't need to make a living, you'll be out of business in no time. I'm from New York originally and don't see how you can make it on that....
They did a great job on my Morky, everything I asked for and more. Dewberry's also gave my cat a kitten clip she was beautiful when done and it really helped with shedding. Both of my pets were very happy upon pickup. What nice people and they are a family run business
Brodie, my SCWT, LOVES his spa days at PAWS. He started at PetSmart and had a wonderful groomer who loved him. When She left to get married, Brodie was not very tolerant of the other groomers. The last time I went to PetSmart with him, I dropped off a Wheaten Terrier and picked up a Schnauzer. I was furious. I took him to PAWS on a referal from a friend and haven't looked back. Its obvious they care for Brodie, they know his sensitivities and how to work around his stubbornness. I have refered people from as far away as Sarasota to use them. They are worth their weight in gold!

I will never try another pet groomer again, specially the ones that use those stupid cage dryers. My friends dog was killed because they forgot her dog in the cage. I used Kristy's mobile grooming. She makes house calls!! It's a husband wife team that always work together so they can take both my Terriers at the same time. It was GREAT!! It is more expensive but my babies are worht it!!
Well, I just read a bunch of the articles in this post and I was amazed that people were more worried about how much it cost to get their dogs groomed. Not the quality or the fact that their dog left happy and beautiful. I have been grooming for 25+ years and it always bothers me when people call asking prices, not what kind of job I do, how long it takes or any thing else regarding the comfort and care of their pets.
I'm not saying that you should be willing to spend a fortune for grooming, however that shouldn't be the only thing to consider in your choice of groomer.
I my case, I don't use muzzles or any form of restraint and I usually get dogs done in 1 to 1 1/2 hours. I like to have the kids picked up as soon as they are done. This avoids them getting too tired out and hopefully keeps them clean and accident free for when they are picked up. I don't injure dogs and rough them up except when we are playing after the grooming is done. My kids enjoy themselves!
I'm currently a dog groomer and I would like to say that if you're a dog owner, and you go to petsmart or petco to get your puppies groomed, don't expect the dog to look good. Half of those "groomers" aren't trained enough to be a good groomer. I mean, don't get me wrong, I know a couple of salon workers there that are fantastic groomers. Also, EVERY groomer is different. If you're groomer will be out of town that week you need the dog groomed, don't just go to another salon. Try to stick with that one groomer. It's good for the dog and its good for the business. So don't complain if the dog is cut differently. Mobile grooming, people say its great, but personally I've worked for two mobile places and it's not good of a grooming job than you think it is. The groomers are usually in a rush to do the dog, and the dog isn't shampooed well. They usually leave dirty and choppy.
with that said, I'm started a "In-home grooming service," business and I would like to know some opinions on what to charge for this. I'm avoiding the mobile grooming prices, cause they over charge you big time. So if any opinions, would be fantastic for me!
I have a rowdy but loving male Boxer. Unlike our visits to the vet, he gets excited when we pull into the parking lot at Paws. The staff really cares about us and seems to give each client special attention.

Pet Grooming is a skill and talent. It is as important as Certified Nursing...all HANDS ON...handling dirty dogs, some so matted that the dogs cannot see; some with wire in their hair and they have been neglected for up to a year. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO TAKE A DOG LIKE THAT FOR LESS THAN $125.00 AS IT TAKES HOURS to do a good job. The dog has feelings and gets frutstrated. Some mats MUST BE CUT OUT, while others can be combed out.
One shop charges $25.00 and hour for de matting and she gets paid her price. A good Grooming job is like a good nurse assistant or hair stylist. A person GETS WHAT THEY PAY FOR...little pay, little work, bad job!

I'm sick & tired of hearing complaints about pricing. Grooming dogs all day is a hard & demanding job. If you don't want to Pay the prices or tip then do the damn grooming yourself, is that simple enough to understand?
Best in Texas and the prices are very reasonable.
You can tell the groomer has a Love for the dogs it shows in her quality workmanship. Bonus is she also does dog boarding and our dogs are Happy puppies every-time they go here and they know when we go they will be well looked after when we pull up in the driveway they get excited..(: It is worth the drive and she lives on 14 acres of land excellent place LOVE IT won't go anywhere else.

I would be scared too if grooming prices went up at each grooming. Hopefully you can find a more reasonably priced groomer in your area. My advise would be to maybe look for a private or single groomer. You're right! That's way too much to pay no matter where you live.
I have been a groomer for 36 years. If someone calls and you are very busy, tell them you will have to call her back to go over grooming prices for her dog and travel time etc. If you decide to do the dog again, make sure before you start the engine, that she knows it will not be 45.00! Good Luck!!
Every time I take my wired haired tiny chihuahua for grooming it started from $45.00, then $51.00 and now $54.00....I'm afraid to take him back again....and this is all within 9 months...Petco is just out for the upsale and they don't listen when you just ask for a simple hair cut and nail clipping...
I am a groomer & got a referral from someone who I typically groom their dog in their home for $40, the dog is 4 pounds, and it takes me 10 minutes to get to him from my townhouse. Their friend they referred to me had a 20 pound Lhasa that was matted that I brushed out, and I drove 45 minutes to get to them. At the end I told her it would be $55, I explained the difference to the woman, but she just kept saying that her friend only paid $40. She gave $45 and walked away. I probably should have told her the price over the phone, but was in a rush because I was grooming and she didn't ask about the price. I felt really used & don't want to make another appointment with the woman even though she set up her next appointment. She was very happy with the grooming & I understand her frustration, but I drove 45 minutes, taking in all an hour and a half driving, & an hour and a half grooming. Three hours for $45. I'd say even $55 in NY is a good deal. What should I tell her next time?
All Small dogs now start at 35. Cockers are 40 + Lab Shaves are 50 + German Shep. Starting at 60.00 Standard Poodle Starts at 65.00 We bust our rears to get dogs show room new in less than a couple hours. Owners can't seem to pick up a brush twice a year but yet they have all the time in the world to complain. I've worked 3 generations of pups and most dogs behave in public better than their owners.
I work at a Petsmart Salon. There are good and bad groomers. Some tips that may help: Drop by the salon and watch the groomers. See how they interact with the dogs. If you see a dog with a great haircut, ask the owner where it was done. Communicate well with the groomer so they know exactly what you want. If your dog is matted they may have to be shaved. Trying to brush out matts close to the skin hurts the dog. Show up on time for your appointment or call if you need to cancel. We have a busy salon and have appointments scheduled all day. It you show up 1/2 hour or more late it puts them behind. If you are a no-show that is money out-of-their pocket. They could have scheduled another dog. Don't be in a rush to drop them off. We need time to look over the dog, ask questions and find out exactly what you want done. If you allow someone else to drop them off either give them exact instructions for what you want or call the groomer. Dogs usually take 3 to 4 hours to groom unless you want an express which means they work exclusively on your dog. If you push to be done earlier it may not be the best job for your pet. Brush your pet, play with their feet it helps with trimming nails, teach your dog basic commands. Groomers are not the dog whisperer. If you can't get your dog to mind more than likely the groomer can't either and they have to use sharp clippers and scissors on them. I have permanant scars from a few dogs that had no training. Tell them if your dog is nippy. We don't want to get bit either. Don't let them bite the brush. Get them used to going in a crate. Turn on the vacuum or hair dryer around them. Last of all, if you don't like the cut tell them. They will do what they can to fix it. It's hard when people say their dog looks fine when they leave but then never come back because they didn't like it. We want you to be happy.

I worked at a large retail pet store as a groomer for quite a while. Although technically we made commission...the truth is that unless we were extremely busy (which we weren't) we only made minimum wage. So I would just say that if you are happy with the outcome of your dog's grooming, please tip the groomer! All the money you pay goes to Petco/Petsmart and not much goes to the groomer who does all the work!
the first groomer who commented about tipping. i understand how you feel.go up on your price. your doing 2 much 4 2 little. dont worry about the tip or how often they can afford 2 return.as u said theres alot involved in this trade and you shouldnt work4 nothing. if they cant afford it theyll stretch their appts or try it theirself & still come back . some people brush and some dont some tip some dont your price willnot change others.it will change your attitude however.god bless
