Hudson Aniimal Hospital. Refused to quote a price before the office visit. I took her in for an office visit 2 weeks ago to have her vaccinated for rabies and distemper cost - $109.00. Dr would not give me a price and told me to call back. I called today, a week before the scheduled procedure and was quoted $400.00 - $500.00 and was told they were doing me a 'favor' by not charging for an office visit before the procedure. Needless to say I have cancelled the appointment. Buyer beware. |

The procedure itself was around $50.00. It's the other "recommended" items that add up. Plus, since he was a "stray", he had worms, fleas and ear mites, so the treat them cost more... |

Breed: short hair cat | Type of Procedure: spay |
Getting a cat spayed up north took a short time, a few stitches, if any, and was over quickly. Down south, it takes hours, dozens of stitches to close a huge wound, taking the cat back to get the stitches removed, back again to have the wound examined, etc. This did not include any blood work, flea or ear mite treatment. Only the surgery and the pain meds. |

I thought it was going to be expensive to spay my cat and dog since everywhere I went was over 200...then I wish I had known about PAWS. My cat had kittens and I had to get them neutered as well. At paws its only 30 for the procedure for each pet. Vaccinations were 20 or free depending which ones your pet needed. I recommend paws because in some cases this procedure is free. I found out about it from my sister and I wasn't dissapointed they took care of my animal and were very helpful answered every question. |

i took my 10 month old cat for a pre spay visit and had an estimate of $145 given the actual bill was almost double that without blood work. The spay estimate was close to $500 and blood work will be an additional $92...the cost included a $270 discount from a spay/neuter assistance program!!!Have decided to shop around before going back there |

Breed: long haired white | Type of Procedure: spay + rabies shot |
I made an appointment to get my 7 month old female cat spayed this week and it costs $92.00 for the spay procedure plus $10.00 for a mandatory rabies shot. So it comes out to $102.00. A male cat would cost about half that. The place is called Madison Veterinary Clinic and the vet is Dr. Lewis. |

we were supposed to pay $20 a cat then when they got the cats apparently they HAD to do bloodwork before they cut anything and then one cat had earmites so that was another $25 for medicine and get this my vet then got mad cause it was what he called "flea season" and one of my cats had 5 fleas on him so he wanted me to buy flea meds. i asked how much they were and almost crapped my pants at the cost, why he got mad was because i told him i was gonna buy them elsewhere and i did and i got them WAY cheaper. |

Because of my previous expensive experience, and the happy reasonable one after that--I say--shop around for spay and neuter services. A year and a half ago, I took a female kitty to a vet that I have been going to for six years. I didn't discuss price because it had been fairly reasonable in the past. The bill with shots came to $285.00. There was no mention of a pregnancy, etc.I was shocked by the bill, and vowed I'd find a much less expensive , but still caring place next time.
Last month, I took another cat to a different vet (after doing some vet shopping) to be spayed--she received the surgery, pain meds, Rabies shot ---all for $59.00. She could go home a few hours after the proceedure, recovered well at home. When shopping for spay and neuter services, call well known animal welfare organizations and see if you can't get better prices with good and caring vets. |

Breed: Moggy (mutt cat) | Type of Procedure: 1 spay; 2 neuter |
I took 3 cats in to have spayed/neutered. I was quoted $40-$100 for the neuters - had one of the boys neutered at the SPCA for $40 and the other at the vet for $40 though 2 other vets wanted well over $100 for neuters. I was quoted spay cost as $100 & rabies shot ($16) with overnight stay at one vet's (the one who neutered my boy) while others quoted $152-$175 without rabies and same day take home.
I figure the one vet (Waddington) keeps her prices down at her cost to help with local feral cat population problems whereas the others don't care.
I have horses - one vet wanted $140 for meds even when I told them I knew the meds were $95 including shipping (as company had always previously shipped directly to me but I needed a new RX). Vet refused to let it go cheaper than $140 then charged me $42.50 for office visit and $16.50 just to write the prescription for the meds to buy directly for a 3 month supply. I let them know I would use another vet (a 50% markup on meds?!?!?) as I would not support their greed (Middletown Vet Clinic). |

Breed: tabby | Type of Procedure: neuter |
The "necessary" exam was $130, which included the 3rd fecal flotation in 4 months. Still haven't figured that one out. The neuter was quoted $127-187, depending on pre-op bloodwork. I had my other cat Spayed for a total of $125 from the previous vet, who retired. it seems that vets use the guilt trip to encourage owners to get the extras. Now I know why people choose to ignore the neuter/spay campaign. |

Breed: Cat: Domestic Shorthair | Type of Procedure: Spay |
This is the price from Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital in Annapolis, MD. They required pre-spay bloodwork at a cost of $95.00, then the actual procedure (including anesthesia and pain meds)cost another $285.00. This is a safe hospital with quality care, which is why I chose to take my cat there. However, I still have receipts from the same procedure for my other cat in 10/2006 and the total cost was under $200.00. Not sure why the price rose quite so steeply in that time. |

We had to spay a stray female who was abandonned at our farm in order to avoid unwanted pregnancy .As we have a houseful of SPCA male cats ,we were unprepared for the cost but had no choice .It is no wonder that there are so many kittens born that no one wants .Come on ,vets, you are compounding the problem and making money off the bleeding hearts of people who can ill afford your high prices! |

every place i called in area quoted 226 dollars plus cost of drugs, iv fluids over the phone. all but one made it sound like 300-400 dollars total. but after getting there and having the mandatory consultation for 61 dollars, they gave us the bill for 610 dollars. it would be 200 dollars more if we got blood work. what a bait and switch. the spca has a 2 month waiting list here. |

Breed: Cat | Type of Procedure: spaying |
Took our kitten in and received an estimate for $213 for spaying, pain med and initial vaccinations. Thought this was high. Then got a call that she was in heat, add money, had worms, add money, had ear mites, add money. I have not picked her up yet but the bill was over $300 when I started crying and hung up on the vet. |

I expected to pay around $125 to $150 but was billed $254 by Liberty Animal Hospital.....and that doesn't include the pre-surgery blood work up which would have been an additional $80! I'm changing vets. I should have called before hand to price it. |

my sister took my cat to the vet for neutering and I expected to pay about $125. She left with him and a $386 bill for tests, shots, flea stuff none of which we agreed to before hand. Be VERY careful. |

Breed: | Type of Procedure: neuter |
I have two cats one of them I got neutered at a place called spay today which costed me $50.00 but this is in NC they have a website their might be more in other places. The other cat I took to the humane society and they brought him back to me that same day neutered and they had given them regular shots and rabies shots and all the certification saying he got them also a heartworm test if you sign off on it for just $30.00 I will be doing this again because that is cheap and it was good work that was done. So my advice if you dont have that much money is to go to your local humane society and see if they can help you spay or neuter your pet. |

The Humane society does it for cheap because they actually want all dogs and cats to be spay/neutered. i spent 100 to get my dog spayed. its more expensive cause its a more complicated procedure. but for neutering it costs $70 |

Breed: Siberian cat | Type of Procedure: neuter |
I was just quoted $235 by the main animal hospital in Alexandria, VA. It is probably a little high because of the location, but this is a very reputable, full-service hospital who will do blood work-ups prior, and then have the cats monitored overnight by professional veterinary staff while they recover. Both cats are 7 months and weigh 9 and 10 pounds now, but that wasn't a factor in the price. Your prices must refer to shelters, vets who don't do blood work, or some place way out in the country where things are really cheap. |
